MARRIAGE ENCOUNTER INDONESIA

How ME Indonesia was born

Founder

At the begining, Sister Patricia from Gembala Baik Jakarta. followed her first WeekEnd in St Louise USA. The Marriage Encounter Week end left a deep impression on her, and she expressed her grateful feelings through her sharing in front of a gathering, where the Jakarta Arch Bishop Mgr. Leo Soekoto was also present. That was the first Marriage Encounter introduction moment for Mgr. Leo.

The second time he learned about Marriage Encounter was during his visit to the Marriage Consultation center at Gent Diocese, Belgium. Here the Bishop was introduced to Father Guido Heyrbaut Pr. who was appointed by Cardinal Suenens to be in charge for the Belgium (Vlaanderen) Marriage Encounter Movement. From that meeting both of them came out to a decision that, father Guido and his team would come over to Indonesia to introduced the Indonesian communities with this new family life foundering techniques. And hapenned in July 25 up to 27, 1975. where the first Marriage Encounter has taken place at Evergreen, Tugu, Puncak, and presented in Vlaams language (Similar to Dutch)

The attendance conisted of:

  • 2 priest:
    Leo Soekoto SJ. and Father Cor van de Meerendonk CICM
  • 9 Married couples:
    Sindhunata, Soetandar, Undyantara, Gunawan, Sarwono, Iskandar Tjan, Gitomartoyo,Tony Trisnadi, and Marsidi,
  • 2 nuns:
    Dolorose CB and Sr. Caroli

The Belgium team consisted of:

Father Guido Heyrbaut Pr. assisted by 2 couples Inneke & Andre de Hondt and
Simmy & Rene Mues

After the WeekEnd, Arch Bishop Leo considered, that this kind of efforts in foundering family lifes should be proceeded, utilizing our own people and language. And here after he decided to send Father Piet Nooy SVD. to Belgium, who was at that time in charge for the Jakarta Diocese marriage preparation courses. In Belgium he followed the M.E. WeekEnd and after that for almost 3 month gathering and studying everything relating the Marriage Encounter

Coming home from Belgium Father Piet worked hard on M.E. and continued his job by preparing the the first WeekEnd team assisted by 2 couples, Tony Trisnadi & Greta and Marsidi & mbak Iyah. Thanks to the intensive preparation because as the come out, the first WeekEnd in Indonesian langguage could be presented in May 7-9 1976, and taken place at the retreat house Samadi Shalom, Sindanglaya. And the followers were 10 couples and 2 nuns. and one of the nuns was Sr. Patricia. The WeekEnd ended successfully! The snow ball started to roll …..

Development

The come out of the first Weekend inspired enthusiasm to the team assisted by couples from the first Indonesian Weekend, right after that they started recruiting new members from Jakarta through a sequential following WeekEnds. Request for Weekends from other Diocese came in. Supported by new team recruitments’ the Marriage Encounter Movement started to grow and spread through whole Indonesian archipelago, expansion WeekEnds was presented for:

  • 856 priest
  • 909 nuns
